'TOMORROW'

Tomorrow stage 1 = 'Tomorrow' c Lucie Walker 2005

Been meaning to paint lately, and have 2 large blank canvasses trying to get my attention, but on this day, I chose a little 5"x7" canvas board from my paint cupboard. It was evening, I'd been sitting at the computer all day, just wanted to do a little doodle, nothing large.

I didn't even think about a subject matter, the first brush stroke I made was the white blanket line across the board. I didn't know it was a blanket yet. What clued me in was when the pillow appeared. The figure on the pillow looks hideous at this point haha and she is actually bald and that black stuff is the beginnings of pillow dent shading. But she looks like a freaky character here. For laughs I wish I'd painted wide open eyeballs!
2.
Made a purdy mouth ;) softened the face. Here I'm going for the hairdo by using the tapered end of a pencil eraser to add curls in. The eraser pushes a little path through the oil paint. Same way I put texture on the walls. You'd be amazed by this simple little tool, it's my best friend when I'm working with oils. One of those little colorful erasers that you pop onto the end of a pencil, over top the existing one. Cheap & effective way to introduce highlight and texture into your work. Easier to control in tight spots than a tiny paintbrush.

Added black paint to the hair so that the eraser marks look like highlights, worked on the face some. Instead of a peaceful sleeper, though, she looks like she might be in a casket, defininately not what I'm going for.

So I play up the blanket then if you look beside her, I introduce a man in her bed. Now the painting is starting to 'talk' to me. Still can't quite make out what it's saying, but I'm listening now. I paint solid colors on the walls. You might notice in every shot so far, there's a red thing next to her pillow, trying to look like a flung arm but it's not happening for me...

...so I get rid of it. I start to add hearts on the wall above her, and I darken the pillow and the man's head.

You know, that blanket edge was starting to bug me, so I painted over it and decided to put in a little night table. Softened the blanket, as well. Pronounced the hearts. The journal and the pen is what prompted me to call the painting 'Tomorrow'. I called it DONE and put it up on the What's New page. Then I went to bed.

Woke up to find another woman in the bed ;) Actually woke up to find that I had painted the 'wrong' woman. I've spoken to the fact that I need to fall in love and well, the love was gone, Baby. So this woman auditioned and she was pretty convincing but ultimately, didn't get the part.

Ok who the hell is this? Some little imp snuck in.

Well laugh it up, Funny Girl.

Well I went through another couple hours' worth of faces and suddenly, I got my sleeping beauty. So the Muse yelled, "Put DOWN the paintbrush and no one will get hurt!" Click on her :)
