'THE VISIT'

The Visit stage 1 = 'The Visit' c Lucie Walker 2006

'The Visit' has a pretty straight-forward feel . . .
a scene replayed in kitchens worldwide.
This is an 8"x10" acrylic on canvas, my first 'multi-media'...haha... In the final version, I outlined the fridge and countertop in 'sharpie'. What is this painter's world coming to??

The Visit stage 1
1.
Just wanted to work from this idea of friends sharing a cup of coffee. I didn't know if I was going to put them in an outdoor cafe or what...

... And when I added the blue, I wasn't sure if it was a floor or the ground outside. Just played with paint. I defined/refined the women a bit. Played with light in their hair, arms, and chairs, turned the little plates into saucers.

When cupboards popped out of my brush, I clued in that they were in a kitchen :) Here you can see the beginning of a fridge on one side, and tile on the other, etched in with the wooden end of my brush. Notice the chair has lost its light...this is temporary, of course, and as a result of painting in the burgundy lower cabinets. Well, the future lower cabinets. :)

4.
I wanted to add some depth to that doorway so it didn't look like if they went through it, they'd step off the planet, haha, so I added the back door, with a coat rack along the wall. I put what will be a bowl on the table, and add a bit of shading under their feet and chair legs. The one woman's hair has blended right in to the cupboards. :)

Then i got busy 'tiling' and added knobs to the cupboards. Also play with the lower cupboards, add what will be a sink, and define that chair a little more.

The fridge has finally moved in, I turned the floor darker which I feel warms up the painting considerably. The women are all finished and fleshed out, the chair has light again, I've painted the back room, and outlined the fridge with a sharpie. Phew! Busy day! The one woman's face is a bit 'horsey' but I end up deciding that's cause she's sipping and we all look a little horsey sipping. hahaha ;) Click on it :)
