'THE LOSS'

'The Loss' stage 1 = 'The Loss' c Lucie Walker 2005

Today was a hard day. Sometimes it just adds up. Not that I go in for that Hallmark pap but I felt it this year, going through a fatherless Father's Day.

Still licking my wounds from that a couple days ago, today would have been his birthday.

But you know, I've lived long enough to figure out that no one gets out alive, so I've just felt a bit heavy and wistful at the rememberance, that's all.

What really finished me today was a letter that started with "We regret that we must advise you that we are unable to..." blah blah blah. Something I'd pinned my hopes on. Sigh. I had a little cry, then I had a big craving to go to a bar. Then I came to my senses and sat down to paint.

1.
She pretty much poured out of me. Usually in these State of the Art pages, there's more before it turns into anything, but she just came screamin' out of my brush in a hurry and the first time time I stepped back, I startled myself by realizing I hadn't taken a photo yet.

2.
I didn't like that she was staring ahead so I started to change her eyes but as you can see I went a little nuts and her left eye crossed.

So I worked on the eye a bit until I got it looking how I wanted. I wasn't going for perfection, just wanted that defeated look. I was there, I tell ya.

4.
You know, that look that comes from a long, shitty day, the look that is part disbelief, part resignation, part loss. Here I added more light and gave the poor thing a beer.

I highlighted and refined everything, and
defined the table with some light.
This painting is the story of my day.
