'THE CLOSET'

closet stage 1 = 'The Closet' c Lucie Walker 2005

'The Closet' is a 14" x 18" acrylic on canvas that I did after a weekend on my own. I'm usually surrounded by 'the menfolk' but half of them went camping and the other half left me to my own devices for the most part. I'm used to "alone time" but with a vast weekend ahead of me, I primed one of my two canvases in anticipation of being so enraptured in solitude that I would have two paintings to show for when they returned. Ah... the best laid plans....as it turns out, I had nothing to show, and it wasn't until they returned that this painting poured out, and the other canvas is still sitting here ;)

Hello, who's this then? As you can see I started the painting using the canvas vertically, and painted the first thing to flow from the brush.

She didn't stay long though, as I flipped the canvas horizontally and covered it in green, deciding to do a nude. The blue "beam me up" beam she's standing in just came from wanting a different colored background. Just playing at this point, not thinking too much at all, but did stick a red towel in her hand. It's already bugging me here that she looks like she's in the shower though...

...so I decide to put her in a bra and panties (just like that!) and turned the blue beam into a closet, and just by changing her setting, her towel turned into some clothing.

I continued playing with it, using a quick & dirty brush to outline my ideas for the rest of the room on the other side of her, adding color on the wall near her. Have no real direction yet with too much, just playing with paint and seeing where it takes me.

Filled in the dresser, mirror, chair and cushion.

Ooh, red wall, I love it. I took the liberty of removing her underwear (it's ok, we're friends now) and worked on the left leg so that it wasn't so bent. I took a wet cloth to the floor and wiped down the darker green, and it revealed the lighter green that was underneath, then using a stiff dry brush, peeled the paint back in those spots.

Tweaked the closet some, and added the blue dresser, with the beginnings of some books on it. Also shadowed around the two squares that will turn into pictures on the wall. Repositioned her bum, ahem, and shaded it.

Added curtains and some light coming through the window, which lightened up that whole side of the room ;) Also added some detail to the wall, the pictures are done, and there's a heart above the chair now, just like the one I have in real life, (Ikea kids' department, they're wall lamps and they're so pretty when they're lit!) Ok I'm back... and a lamp on the bureau. Played with paint on the floor, and worked on shading her body some more.

Here I refined a bunch of stuff, the books on the dresser, added postcards and photos around the edge of the dresser mirror, added a lightbulb and some highlights to the closet, and some shading to her body.

In this final version, I added one more postcard to the mirror and realized if this was to look like a real woman, there would have to be stuff on the bureau, so I painted a jewelery box, a lipstick, and a hydrangea in a plain vase. (If it was a self-portrait, there would have been clothes on the floor but that's another story). I took the painting outside in the light of day and took a good photo of it. Click on it :)
