'THE BUS'

'The Bus' stage 1 = 'The Bus' c Lucie Walker 2005

I was in the mood to sketch, which for me is rare...usually I just have at it with a paint brush. But I'm out of canvas at the moment, but found a pad of 16"x20" canvas paper in my studio, and am finding it really welcoming. This is the 3rd painting I've done in three days, just bangin' 'em out right now, something I half attribute to the non-intimidating paper, and half to the fact that my life hurts right now and better this as an outlet than oh, say... drinking. TMI? Oh well. ;)

I started this very quick sketch with the girl reclining and it rapidly turned into what felt like an airport, with the folks on the bench and the others scurrying around behind them. Funny how her posture is (unintentionally) all "Do me." haha

2.
I toned her down (ahem) and started filling in some color around her.

I had originally thought that the person right next to the man would be one of two teen girls giggling...boy was I wrong!! She was a teen alright, in 1921, ha. If you look closely, you'll see the beginnings of a little child next to her. The red above his head is the red that will become the bench back.

4.
Beside the little child now sits his very pregnant mom. Next to her is an old woman.

I stepped back and suddenly saw the painting in a new light and realized that this was not an airport lounge, it was a bus!! So I added windows and a pole. The boyfriend walks in and I say, " Hey check out the painting I'm working on..." And he says, "Cool. Are they in a doctor's waiting room?"
6.
Sigh. So I say, "Nooo.... it's a bus." And he feigns recognition, saying, 'Ah, yeahhh." So I ask him, 'What would make it look more like a bus, then?" And he said, "Rounded windows." And sure enough, he's right.

Here I've tweaked everything until I was happy with it.
I really dig this painting!
