1.
Took out a large canvas and sat
under the tree in my yard to paint. The dappled sunlight gave me the idea to
"work" with light for this painting. |

2.
The light on the painting so far is
not paint, it's the sun. :) Here I add bushes, not really knowing where I'm
going with this yet. This is an unplanned painting, just going with the mood to
paint.

Here's a close-up of the ladies so far

4.
Starting to play with light on the
lawn, on the umbrella, and on the bushes.
|

5.
I add a tree and play with the
light some more. I've never done trees like this before and figure out that the
right brush basically does it for you. I just tapped a 1" flat brush gone
messy onto the canvas and didn't have to work too hard at making it look
tree-like. I started with black blobs, which lemme tell ya, took a bit of
courage! At this point, I'm still thinking (absently) that all the blue is
water.
|

6.
With the same brush, (dry-ish, by the way) I add green to the
trees with the same technique and stand back thinking, "Wow, you'd think I
knew what the hell I was doing!" I add what I hope looks like dappled
light to the lawn, :) and add a curved black line to signify hilliness.
|

7.
Well I guess I got into it, because this is the next
picture I took! As you can see, the painting has filled out somewhat! Same
technique on all the trees, and I added a pond behind them.
|

8.
In this final version, I changed the umbrella to red and added
a fringe, since it merged into the pond too much color-wise. I defined the
ladies and their chairs, added more bushes at the front of the painting,
painted the sky blue, tweaked the pond, and added a path. Click on it
