'QUIET TIME'

Quiet Time before becoming Quiet Time = Quiet Time c Lucie Walker 2005

This painting started out as an acrylic but finished off as an oil. I do this quite often because the oil really brightens the work. I underpaint in acrylic, and detail in oil, which works as long as the acrylic is all the way dry. It doesn't work, however, to put acrylic on top of oil...ahem. But last time I was at my favorite hangout, the art store, I saw water-based oil that I'm going to check out.

I really am learning as I go!

OK, here's how Quiet Time came to be . . .

Quiet Time before becoming Quiet Time Quiet Time stage 2
1.
I was in a sad mood when
I sat down to paint and this is
what came out. Some folks
see a shrink, I paint :) I like this
painting still and it may emerge
again some day but. . .
2.
. . . next time I approached the painting,
I guess I must have cheered up some
and the mood had passed, because
I was no longer satisfied
with the 'sadsack' figure.

3.
Then for a couple days, the path was bugging me without someone on it, so I painted over it and turned it into water. Even when a painting is 'not working', I find it still takes an act of bravery to paint over it. Don't think I'll ever get over that feeling! So now I had no path (good) but only water (not so good).

4.
I wasn't at all sure what to do, but once the water was in, the Mermaid idea kept nudging me from within and I kept shooing it away, thinking 'That's too weird!' But it wouldn't let go, so I started her. Once I did, I knew she was meant to be!!
Know how I know that?
Because I fell in love with her, and the painting (and my world) suddenly made perfect sense!

5.
From this point onward, I went at the
painting with purpose and excitement.
The entire process from beginning to end
took a few days, not without frustration,
but always with the determination
to keep coming back to it 'cause
I know one thing for sure:

I KNOW IT'S IN THERE!!!
Click on her :)
