'OPEN'

'Open' stage 1 = 'Open' c Lucie Walker 2004

This painting is from early last year, soon after I'd been bitten by the paint bug.

There are things I see now that I'd do differently...ah, hindsight . . .

I must say, in looking at the first picture, I could have stopped there, (after I fixed those lobster claws, heh heh) BUT! I kept the mood all the way through.

It's a picture that hangs in my home and I love the woodsy, earthy tone and if I look at this piece long enough, I swear I get that cheap tavern smell.

1.
So out of my brush popped this hurt n' hard-done by woman. (No relation, ahem.) The heart (by her hands) was to be the back of a cocktail seat and behind her, I'd taken a dirty brush and sketched in a set dinner table.

2.
I don't draw things first and paint them in, I just paint from the get-go and things can change with one brushstroke and suddenly it's veered off in another direction! This was the case when I realized I wanted her in a bar and the heart wasn't workin' for me anymore, so suddenly my brush started putting in some seats in that area instead. It was the brush, I tell ya.

I liked it, though, so I kept going and added some folks in a booth, did some detail on the counter, tossed in a scrunched up napkin to add to her 'used up' vibe.

4.
From here it was details, like the OPEN sign in the door, which to me said it all, and some shading on the walls, oh and looky, another couple dropped by in the next booth. Oh, and I repositioned (ok HID) her hands.

I kept the top lit up area like that on purpose.
Wanted to leave both an undone feeling,
and a ray of hope in the light. Click on her :)
