'BEACH DAY'

Beach Day stage 1 = 'Beach Day' c Lucie Walker 2006

'Beach Day' is an 18"x24" acrylic on canvas.

1.
I just started out by painting the canvas bright orange, then played with painting a face, an excellent way to loosen up...with the ever-present intention that it might just turn into something....

But it doesn't. ;) So I painted right over it, and did this nude, which is another great way to loosen up.

True story: Our landlord called and said he was on his way over to collect the rent, and he's a really lovely, modest, old-world man, and I was all set up in the living room, so out of respect for him, I quickly painted a dress on her, figuring I could just "take it off" again once he was gone. I know. Steve rolled his eyes too. :P

I started sort of enjoying her look though, and decided to add more hair...

I kept refining her face, adding shadows and light. Next, I painted a blanket for her to lay on, and what looks like the beginning of a headboard. But it also felt like the end of my painting, as there wasn't really anywhere to go with it.

So...... I took her to the beach! The headboard became sand and ocean, her lingerie turned into a bathing suit.

Now I felt like the painting was telling a story; even more so once I added the children, the book, etc. I also gave her some teeth :) Suddenly I noticed that where her strap is off her shoulder, there is no tan line....and her other arm has been bothering me, in particular, by her arm pit, so...

... I completely reposition it and place her new forarm across her stomach and rest her hand on the page. Walla! I also reshape her boobs a bit, making them smaller. I extend her waist because when I repositioned her arm, as it just didn't look right anymore. Gonna have to add in that bathing suit pattern. You can see I'm still playing with her face.

Here, I whiten her teeth and give her a slightly bigger smile. Very slight, because I still want her to look like she's *just* looked up from reading when someone called her name for this 'photo'. (You know, the one taken at the beach.) ;)

I decide to untie her other strap and instantly feel that doing this adds more life and movement and even reality to the painting. I also add a small red flower on her suit. The arm supporting her head was bothering me and I realized that the shading was all wrong.... I had kept it dark because it was "under" the sun, but really, that part of my own arm is paler, so why not hers, right? There. That fixes it. Also, added a shadow to the children's beach ball. I tweak the hands and mostly feel this is finished, but in the real life, final version, I may add text and photos to the book she's reading. And then I may add it here in a photo, to show you. Click on her :)
