'ANDREA'

'Andrea' stage 1 = 'Andrea' c Lucie Walker 2005

This is my very first "altered portrait" and it came about quickly and rather unexpectedly!

'Andrea' stage 1
1.
This marks the first time EVER that I have worked from a photograph! I didn't sketch with pencil first, I just used acrylic paint, straight from brush to canvas paper.

'Andrea' stage 2
2.
The photo was cropped at the chin so I invented the neck and shoulders, and put her on a green background. Obviously lightened up the face a lot and refined it overall.

'Andrea' stage 3
3.
Just kept playing with the colors and shading, trying to add depth under the skin

'Andrea' stage 4
4.
All through these stages, I am tweaking the lips, the eyes, the shading. It's hard to discern the details here, but man, never having done this before, I was amazed to learn how many layers of "seeing" there are... I would think "There, that's got it" then look again and see something new...
Oh and she changed her dress...

'Andrea' stage 5
5.
So for a while there, this painting was all about the tweaking. An eyelid, some shading on the cheek, the eyes, etc. At this point, I changed the background somewhat, and the boyfriend came in and mentioned the outline around her face was too dark and thick, and as usual, he was right ;) (Sometimes, "seeing" takes a different set of eyes ;))

'Andrea' stage 6
6.
So I toned down the "outline" and continued to shade the chest and neck areas.

Ok there goes the background. Painted it all black, with no idea of where it was going, just knew it hadn't been working for me yet and thought that by doing this, I would shake it up and change my vision of this painting and get a feel for where it was going.

'Andrea' stage 8
8.
I took a wet rag and wiped away the black, and while it was still "not there", I already liked it better.

'Andrea stage 9
9.
Suddenly, a background came into my head and I went at it without much pause.

'Andrea' stage 11
10.
It wasn't feeling finished, and in looking at it long and hard, I realized that this was the painting that I was going to try going multi-media with. I have been wanting to loosen up creatively and add other elements to my paintings, and for this I chose to collage.

You might recognize bits of my other paintings in there... there's the heart from "Elixir" and the woman from "Waiting" one of the the fairies from "Fairies" and in the top right corner, a few of the women from the "Retro Girls" collection

12.
My favorite thing that came out of doing this was when the flying woman from "Over It" was heading through the window from the painting "Moon". That gave me an idea for future works, to have elements of one painting "visiting" another painting. Hmmmm....One last "tweak"... I painted gold around the "Elixir" heart and WALLA, she's done... Click on her :)
