. Swedish Review Translated At Last!

On March 10, 2001, Hallandsposten, a Swedish daily paper, printed a CD review of Straight Up. Not knowing Swedish, we had no idea what it said. Could have been good or bad, and we were curious!

So we thought it would be fun to turn it into a website contest, and give a CD to the first one to translate it. We figured in would take a week at the outside. Well . . .

It took 18 months for it to happen, but SOMEONE HAS ENTERED OUR CONTEST!!
Nevermind that they "won," at this point, we're just blown away that someone finally entered!

His name is Barry Appleby, and he e-mailed us all the way from Sweden with his translation! (Ain't the net grande?) and so he's the lucky winner of a Straight Up CD!

Now, you're probably asking yourself how we know it's an accurate translation, and not a perverse joke ;-) well, up until this summer, that would have been the million dollar question (ok, 50 cents) but in July I had the opportunity to get my Swedish friend, Johan Rosqvist, to translate it for us, since I'd long given up on the contest! Damoe's Demise . . .Damoe's has changed hands and we're off on foot. . .

The Thursday Night Dinner & Open Mic at Damoe's has wrapped up because the owners have sold the place. We had a chance to continue on at Carnegie's, (a local bar/restaurant) but have passed on the duties. In the four weeks that we hosted Damoe's, we realized we'd rather rock!

Us in a room with microphones, man, we were twitchin' to play but it was always someone else's turn!

We really enjoyed it, though, and met some wonderful people. Mark Bignell, host of co-op radio's "Radio Bandcouver" (Fridays 10pm on Vancouver's 102.7 FM) is one such person. He does so much to support Vancouver's live original roots music scene; actively promoting local acts by booking them on his radio show, hiring musicians for weekly showcases, and is an all around advocate of independent music.

One of the highlights of hosting the open mic was meeting touring Calgary Artist, Lindsay Jane, and Damoe's put us in the position of being able to offer her a place to play, complete with an enthusiastic audience. That felt really great! The next week, we caught her set at the Silvertone, and bought her CD. This girl's writing is excellent, and her voice is KILLER.

We Have A Song Plugger!
(a song what?!)

A song plugger is someone who takes a songwriter's original songs and tries to sell them to big, fancy, famous Recording Artists!

Bruce Kilby, of B.C. Songwriters Association and Nashville Songwriters Association, has agreed to shop our songs for us, and he's already managed to get a few of our songs off to Sony Nashville for consideration!
WAY TO GO, BRUCE!

I can't tell you what it means to us to have Bruce taking care of this for us. We have long known that we need to "shop" our songs, but don't seem to have the sense between us to handle it. And now, with Bruce's magic touch, we feel like there's hope for us yet! As he said to me in a recent e-mail, "At least now, we have a line in the pond." Amen!
