Traveling over
5000 miles across Canada in a small, tightly packed mini van may not seem like
fun for many, but for singing duo Steve Elliott and Lucie Walker it is indeed
the experience of a lifetime.
This talented country music act from Vancouver, have been playing various clubs
to help pay their way to Moncton to attend a family reunion and, last weekend,
Fredericton residents got to hear them perform at the Bugaboo Creek Pub in the
Brookside Mall.
Born in Liverpool, England and raised in Vancouver, Steve Elliott has been a
musician since the age of 5. He has had his music recorded by artists such as
"Loverboy" guitarist, Paul Dean, and Nashville country star, Ricky
Van Shelton. Even though Steve and his family left Liverpool when he was just
two years old, he says he does have a connection to the city's famous Fab
Four.
"My cousin's ex-husband was the first drummer in The Quarrymen, who of
course would later go on to become The Beatles. He left the band because he
didn't think they were going anywhere", Elliott says with a smile.
Lucie Walker recalls she has been singing as far back as she can remember. A
French girl from Quebec, she moved with her family to Ontario when she was 8.
At age 12, she was accepted into music school where she sang with the
award-winning St.Peter's choir. It was there that she became inspired to write
songs.
At 19, winning a singing contest gave her the boost she needed to join a band
and hit the road! Her powerful and versatile voice led her to a
behind-the-scenes career singing dozens of radio and T.V. jingles. She was the
1998 Original Composition winner of the B.C. Country Music Association's Talent
on Tape contest.
Lucie is also a talented songwriter. "A lot of people's songs are about
pain and depression and I'm a real happy girl, so they don't come that
often," joked Lucie. It's their sense of humor, zest for life, and the
bond that they share with one another that gives the two their energy on stage.
It didn't take them long after pooling their talents, to realize their sound
was quite unique and they made a dynamic combination. Recently they released
their very first CD, titled "Straight Up", which has been selling
briskly at their shows. Next month the pair will open for Terri Clark in
Edmonton, a show they are very excited about doing, before heading back to
Vancouver for some much needed rest.
